Psalm 23 Meaning: God's Goodness Is Chasing You
God's goodness isn't trailing behind you. It's chasing you.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. ... Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Before David was a king, he was the youngest son out keeping his father's sheep (1 Samuel 16:11). He fought off a lion and a bear for that flock (1 Samuel 17:34-36). He knew exactly what a shepherd does: find the grass, find the water, walk in front of the sheep through the dark valley.
"I shall not want"
It means I will not lack. Not because the sheep worked harder. Because the shepherd showed up.
The psalm moves in four steps: provision (verses 1-3), protection in the valley (verse 4), a table set in front of your enemies (verse 5), and a home with Him forever (verse 6).
The word that changes the ending
"Goodness and mercy shall follow me." The Hebrew word for follow is radaph. It means to pursue, to chase, to hunt down. It's the same verb used for armies in pursuit, like Pharaoh chasing Israel to the sea (Exodus 14:4).
And mercy there is hesed: covenant love that doesn't let go. So read it again. Goodness and loyal love are chasing you down, all the days of your life. Jesus picks the image right back up in John 10:11: "I am the good shepherd."
