Isaiah 40:31 Meaning: Trade Your Tired for His Strength
You hand Him your tired. He hands you His strength.
“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Written to tired people
Isaiah 40 opens a section often called the Book of Comfort (chapters 40 to 55). It starts with "Comfort, comfort my people" (40:1), spoken to Judah facing exile in Babylon. Tired, far from home, and wondering if God had forgotten them.
And God answers: I don't faint. I don't grow weary. I give power to the faint.
Wait is not sitting still
The word for wait is qavah: to wait with eager expectation. Its noun form, tiqvah, means hope. It is also the word for the scarlet cord Rahab hung in her window (Joshua 2:18, 21). Waiting on the Lord is holding on to Him, not passing time.
Verse 30 is honest: even young men fall exhausted. The strength promised here isn't youth or grit. It's His.
Renew means exchange
The word for renew is chalaph: to change or exchange, the word used for changing clothes (Genesis 35:2). You hand Him your tired, and He hands you His strength.
And notice the order. Soar, run, then walk. The big miracle isn't the eagle. It's walking through a normal Tuesday and not quitting.
